Located in the coastal suburb of Redcliffs, this house draws from the character of its surroundings. Cliffs and caves of red volcanic rock are a defining feature of Te Rae Kura meaning ‘glowing headlands’. The house playfully references the local vernacular of the iconic Taylors Mistake Cave Dwellings nearby.
Volcanic rock excavated from the site forms a series of monolithic stone walls which envelope the ground floor and anchor the building.
The surrounding site has been shaped to provide a range of outdoor terraces and courtyards connecting to spaces within the building.
This stone base supports a monopitched form, wrapped in an assembly of exposed steel and dark metal cladding, projecting the living spaces within towards the view.
