Whananaki Cottage is conceived as a refined coastal retreat that honours the memory of the original cottage once located on the site. Its distinctive pitched roof forms intentionally echo the silhouette of the former dwelling, while the new structure retains a footprint closely aligned with the original. This sensitive approach allows the house to sit naturally within its coastal landscape, balancing continuity with a contemporary architectural expression.
Large openings and a restful, calm material palette, enhance the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding environment. The design embraces simplicity, clarity, and an enduring sense of place, offering a calm, light-filled retreat that respectfully reinterprets what came before.
